For years, warnings have been given about exposure to the sun's rays because of the risk of skin cancer.
Now, there's this...

It is now better for you go even go unprotected in the sun because of the increased vitamin D.
So, we now have a choice - normal lives, or, melanomas with increased vitamin D.
The scientific press sometimes get it all horribly wrong.

Based on research, Vitamin D may also be one of the best sources for preventing the flu; possibly equal to or superior to a flu shot. Further research needs to be done to verify this is true. I read this in Science News http://www.sciencenews.org but was unable to find a link to the original story.
Everyone seems to agree more Vitamin D would benefit us, so I strongly suggest eating more foods with a high natural content of Vitamin D, along with Vitamin D supplements. As for standing in the sun at midday, I have always wondered about cancer studies that demand we stay out of the sun. If those wonderful Evolutionists are correct, surely we evolved, better equipped to handle the vagaries of the sun, than current research says. Afterall, our ancestors spent more time in the sun than we do. However, our bodies must have limits. "Too much of a good thing", as the saying goes.
Let Nature be my teacher. Though it may be strictly the heat, I notice ants tend to slack off and disappear from around noon to as late as 2:00p.m. in Florida's sunshine. I take this as a sign for man that the heat, and probably the radiation, at this time of day is unsafe. Better to seek cover, if possible. The midday sun "may indeed" increase production of Vitamin D through exposure and our ancestors were outdoors at all hours more than we are. Yet, even mankind has tended to seek shade in the heat of the day.
Therefore, I vote for staying out of the midday sun and finding various ways to add Vitamin D to ones diet. A "good" dose of sun beats being fried, but the noonday sun puts you in a frying pan. Science is great for guidance, yet one has a brain and should use it to evaluate what science says. Thank you.
